Discussion between scientists and farmers along with foundation stone laying for Jaggery Processing and Training Unit was held on 7th November, 2016 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra of RAU, Pusa Piprakothi, East Champaran (Bihar). Hon'ble Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Shri Radha Mohan Singh was the Chief Guest of the occasion. The foundation stone ceremony was done by him in presence of Director, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow, Dr A.D. Pathak, many MLAs and other dignitaries and staff of KVK, Piprakothi. Dr Pathak highlighted the achievements of ICAR-IISR, Lucknow. In his address Hon'ble Minister highlighted the importance of sugarcane crop in Bihar state and informed that the climate of Bihar is more suitable for economical and quality sugarcane production. Insufficient availability of sugarcane and lack of infrastructure, co-ordination at lower level, irrigation facility, and irregular power supply and use of low productivity crop are the major problems. These are also responsible for low recovery of sugar. He also highlighted the importance of Jaggery for employment of unskilled labourers. Due to low recovery in sugar mills, there is a need to promote other products from sugarcane.
Hon'ble Minister also emphasized the need of rehabilitation of old sugar mills and opening of advance jaggery manufacturing units to cater the need of sweeteners. There is still lack of proper management, quality control, efficient furnaces and knowledge of alternative sources of energy. There is also need of proper training of jaggery producers along with improvement in sugarcane varieties. For proper usage of jaggery, especially in rural women and children, capacity to fight against malnutrition could be developed. There is a need to develop proper facilities for research and development in this direction.
