IISR, Lucknow and Bihar Govt. Signed MoU for Breeder Cane Seed Production

Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), Lucknow signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)-Phase II with the Sugarcane Industries Department, Government of Bihar for production of breeder seed of improved sugarcane varieties on March 12, 2014 in Patna. According to terms of MoU, every year 5500 Quintals of breeder seed will be produced under technical guidance of IISR scientists in Hasanpur Sugar Mill, Samastipur (Bihar) and IISR Regional Centre, Motipur (Bihar). Dr. S. Solomon, Director, IISR and Shri Sudhir Kumar, Principal Secretary, Sugarcane Industries Department, Government of Bihar signed the MoU. On this occasion Shri Chitranjan Singh, Cane Commissioner, Shri Bijay Kumar, Join Director Cane Development, Government of Bihar and representatives of all 11 working Sugar mills in Bihar were present. A total of rupees seventy five lakh (Rs 75 lakh) was given by Govt. of Bihar to IISR, Lucknow under MoU-Phase II.

In the first phase of MoU over 12500 quintals breeder seed per annum is being produced and distributed for multiplication at Harinagar Sugar Mill and IISR Regional Centre, Motipur. Mr. Sudhir Kumar also informed that an increase of 15-20% in sugarcane production is being observed during current year besides significant improvement in sugar recovery. Dr. Solomon reminded the IISR’s commitment for gradual development of sugarcane yield and sugar recovery in Bihar.
