Regional Centre, Motipur, Muzaffarpur (Bihar) of Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research celebrated Silver jubilee on 29-30 November, 2013

The Silver Jubilee of Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research Regional Centre, Motipur was celebrated on 29th – 30th November, 2013, which included a National Seminar on “IISR Initiatives for Improving Sugarcane and Sugar Industry in India sub-tropics” and farmer’s training on Quality Sugarcane Seed Production. The National Seminar and farmer’s training on Quality Sugarcane Seed Production was inaugurated by Dr. S. Solomon, Director, IISR, Lucknow. He congratulated everyone on completion of twenty five years of the Regional Centre. In his remarks the major achievements and future road map of the centre was highlighted. He announced to transform this as Mini Institute having facilities for Soil Testing and Bio-control Laboratory for the farmers of this region.

Dr. A.D. Pathak, Nodal Officer presented the achievements of the Regional Centre during the last twenty five years. The major achievements include the release of five early maturing (Co 87263, Co 87268, Co 89029, Co 0232 and CoLk 94184) and one mid-late maturing (Co 0233) varieties for north central zone of India in addition to evaluation of germplasm/ interspecific and intergeneric hybrids for target breeding. Seed Production made in past and seed production under Bihar Sugarcane Seed Production was also highlighted. Dr. T.K. Srivastava, Head, Crop Production; Dr. P.R. Singh, Head, Agricultural Engineering; Sh. M. Singh, G.M., Harinagar Sugar Mills and Sh. Ratnesh Kumar, Sr. A.O., IISR expressed their views. Dr. S.N. Singh proposed the vote of thanks and Dr. Deeksha Joshi conducted the proceedings.

In the National Seminar 15 invited lectures and 11 other lectures were presented covering all aspects of sugarcane cultivation in sub tropical India. The seminar was attended by Scientists, sugar mill representatives, sugarcane development personnel and farmers.

Training on Quality Seed Production in Sugarcane was conducted. In this event, more than 200 farmers participated.
