Collaborative Effort to address the problem of low sugar recovery in UP

The sugar recovery in Uttar Pradesh during sugarcane current crushing season 2011-12 is showing a decline over the corresponding period of last year. In west UP recovery is dropped about 0.5 unit. This down trend in recovery observed till date for current season is alarming for sugar industry and industry may suffer a huge loss due to low sugar production in the state. To address the problem, an interaction meeting between a top level sugar industry official Dr. G. S. C. Rao, President, Suagr Technologist Association of India & CEO, Simbhaoli Sugars Limited and Sugarcane Scientists was held today at Indian Institute of sugarcane Research, Lucknow. Dr. Rao appealed the scientists for concerted effort to check the decline in sugar recovery in UP & he also highlighted the technological development in the Indian sugar industry. He emphasized the collaborative effort between industry and scientists to address the problem like low sugarcane & sugar yield, increasing cane cultivation cost and declining factor productive in sugarcane. Dr. S. Solomon, Direcor, IISR reminded the commitment of the institute towards well-being of sugar industry and sugarcane farmers. He also highlighted the technologies such as high sugar variety CoLk 94184, improved planting methods, irrigation water saving sugarcane technologies, sugarcane cultivation machines, INM, Bio-control of insect-pests, Trichoderma application, chemical ripeners for inducing maturity and technology to reduce “kill-to-mill-loss”. The adoption of these technologies at large scale may enhance the yield of sugarcane and sugar. To address the problem of Low sugar recovery IISR Scientists suggested the spray of chemical ripeners in affected mill zone areas to induce the maturity and enhance recovery.
