A farmers’ Conference on Organic Farming for enhancing field crops production and doubling of farmers income organised jointly by the Dy Director, Agriculture, Lucknow and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, and was inaugurated by Shri Ranvendra Pratap Singh, Hon’ble Agriculture Minister for State, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh at ICAR-IISR, Lucknow on 06.08.2018. Speaking on the occasion, the Hon’ble Minister told the participating farmers that he was here as the ambassador of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for conveying their massages of improving the health of soils, enhancing crops yields and doubling of farmers income using organic method of field crops production with reduced cost. Hon’ble Minister stressed the need for adopting “Jeevamrit” in field crops production, so that the application of indiscriminate use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers could be reduced to many fold and the human lives could be saved from the dreaded disease-cancer. He further told that “Jeevamrit” is prepared using urine of indigenous cows besides other ingredients, for which a detailed method of preparation and its application was also elaborated by him. The Minister also shared his experiences about “Jeevamrit” method of crops cultivation with the participating farmers, KVK Scientists and development officers from the state govt. of Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. S.K. Shukla, Project Coordinator, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow highlighted about the importance of organic farming in sugarcane based cropping system across the country. Dr. Shukla also emphasized the importance of carbon sequestration in Rice-Wheat-Sugarcane cropping system, and also detailed about the restoration of soil fertility and improving crops productivity in the present cropping systems being followed by the farmers of Uttar Pradesh. Dr. S.N. Singh, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK, as co-organizer of the above programme, stressed the need for recycling of crops residues for improving the health of soils and reducing the environmental pollution causing due to burning of crop residues after harvesting of field crops by the farmers though ignorantly. Dr. Singh also told the participating farmers that we should avoid monocropping and adopt intercropping systems in field crops production using green manures and legumes as intercrops for improving soil health with minimum use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Dr. C.P. Srivastava, Dy. Director Agriculture, Lucknow compeered the entire programme, welcomed the Chief Guest, participating farmers and other dignitaries of Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Srivastava told the farmers about the agricultural development programmes being implemented by the Agricultural Department of Uttar Pradesh. Soil Health Cards and other prizes were distributed to the farmers. The programme ended with the vote of thanks to the Chair and participating farmers. About 300 farmers participated in this programme.
