Committed for an efficient, globally competitive and vibrant sugarcane agriculture

All India Coordinated Project on Sugarcane

Brief History

Till 1929, there was no co-ordination of research activities in different states. This lacuna was identified by the Sugar Committee of the then Imperial Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and a chain of seventeen research stations, devoted to the improvement of sugarcane, was set up throughout the country. On the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Agriculture, the Imperial (now Indian) Council of Agricultural Research was constituted in 1929 for coordinating research in several crops in different states. In its first meeting in 1929, the I.C.A.R. recommended the protection to sugar industry. Indian Tariff Board recommended it in 1930 and the fiscal protection was granted in 1932. Initially, Imperial Council of Agricultural Research and later on Indian Central Sugarcane Committee financed certain aspects of research from 1933 to 1946. Later on, the commodity committees were abolished and the I.C.A.R again took over all the research activities.

Sugarcane is grown in several states of the country having diverse agro-climatic conditions both in tropical and subtropical regions and as such, the problems of sugarcane crop are of distinct and diverse nature. As a consequence, research emphasis and approaches vary and are largely location oriented. A strong research infrastructure has been established over the years to cater to the needs of the crop. The research support in sugarcane is provided at two levels, i.e. Central and State levels. At present, the research centers are being run by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, State Agricultural Universities, State Departments of Agriculture and Non-Government Organizations.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research sanctioned the All India Coordinated Research Project on Sugarcane (AICRPS) in 1970-71 as a Fourth Five Year Plan Project to intensify research on important problems of sugarcane having regional or local significance with its headquarters at the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow. The first Workshop of AICRP on Sugarcane was held on January 15-19, 1970 at the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow.

  • Evaluation of locally adapted sugarcane varieties with improved yield and quality as well as resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
  • Development of package of practices for higher cane sugar production.
  • Development of low cost technologies for sugarcane production.
  • Intensifying and extending the networking facility and information generation for transfer of technology to the farmers and sugar industry.

  1. To coordinate multilocation testing of germplasm and advance breeding materials for evaluating appropriate region/location specific improved varieties.
  2. To organize and conduct strategic and applied research of inter-disciplinary nature for evolving appropriate region/location specific package of practices for crop production.
  3. To develop region or location specific strategies for integrated disease and pest management.
  4. Enhancement and maintenance of disease free nucleus seed material for distribution to the cooperating organizations.
  5. To disseminate generated information and technology.
